Serengeti National Park; Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s premier wildlife safari destination. Starting & Ending Point: Arusha

Arusha is the main entry point to northern Tanzania’s safari circuit. Located at the base of Mount Meru and near Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), it serves as a convenient starting and ending point. The town features accommodations, markets, shops, and travel services. While it’s not a safari destination itself, Arusha is perfect for picking up your rental vehicle and finalising your logistics.

The Classic Route

Beginning in Arusha, you take a self-drive 4×4 Land Cruiser to view wildlife in Tarangire, then the mirror-like Lake Manyara, and finally to the Serengeti National Park. The loop then returns through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before heading back to Arusha. The recommended duration for the classic Northern Circuit is 10–14 days, covering approximately 170 litres of fuel, with the best time to visit being June to October.

Vehicle Requirements

There are rental companies in Tanzania that specialise in equipping travellers for self-drive safaris. These companies provide 4×4 vehicles, detailed maps, and sometimes GPS devices to help you traverse the terrain. Some even offer pre-planned itineraries to simplify your journey. The game-viewing tracks within Tarangire, Manyara, and Ngorongoro Crater are well-marked, non-technical, and provide a gentle introduction to self-driving in Tanzania. However, the gravel road from Naabi Hill Gate to the Serengeti is challenging — it has a rocky surface and washboard ribbons. Think of the absolute worst gravel road you have ever travelled on — those exact same conditions can extend for 150 km without a let-up, with endless severe corrugations shrouded in continual dust.

Misleading Navigation

Google Maps travel times are misleading for Tanzania. Instead, add at least 30% extra time to any suggested duration. This realistic planning prevents arriving at camps after dark. Google insists that some of the best back-road routes are not possible — even on walking directions — which is why you’ll need to use either a paper map or Maps.me to navigate in the region.

Night Driving Dangers

It is safe to travel independently in Tanzania during the day. However, driving at night, especially in Tanzania’s more isolated safari destinations, is less secure. Outside urban areas, there aren’t many streetlights, and everyone uses their high beams while driving at night, which can blind you and cause accidents. On roads with many potholes, it can be very challenging to see the road well at night.
