Wildlife in Rwanda attract thousands of visitors for holiday Safaris every year to visit this East African Country in the heart of Africa. There are several destinations in Rwanda for wildlife tours – Nyungwe National Park for Primates safaris, and Akagera National Park for game viewing, however, Parc National des Volcans (PNV) is the most outstanding one – situated in the Virunga mountains shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this mountainous National park is home to the rare Mountain Gorillas. The national park is also known for Golden Monkeys and the Virunga Six Peaks, which are an attraction for hikers. All these have gained the attention of the international community, and have contributed to inspiring success in gorilla conservation. This success can be attributed to the highly motivated teams of park staff and the awareness of the community around the park. Not only will you be contributing to the survival of a critically endangered species, but also having a remarkable gorilla trekking experience in the process.

An Overview of Wildlife Safaris in Rwanda

Rwanda’s wildlife is concentrated and accessible. For a start, it is relatively easy to reach the Akagera National Park. This is located in the east of the country on the border with Tanzania, disarmingly beautiful. Akagera teeming with game and a good network of tracks and accommodations is worth wildlife safaris in Rwanda. Game drives are a real delight, with few other tourists, and an opportunity to see an impressive range of wildlife, including elephants, buffalos, topis, zebras, waterbucks, lions and black rhinos. Rwanda, “a land of a thousand hills”, to many is synonymous with mountain gorilla trekking, made famous by Dian Fossey. But for those seeking a complete African wildlife experience, Rwanda offers a lot more than just gorillas.

Rwanda’s National parks contain many ecosystems and serve as storehouses of genetic diversity and their primary role is ecological. By protecting the mid-to-highland forests, savannahs, and montane ecosystems within the parks, Rwanda has preserved the biological diversity that is so unique to its geographical location. All four of Rwanda’s vegetation zones are well represented in protected areas. Mountain Gorillas are a flagship species, and their survival has largely depended upon the conservation of their habitat. The ongoing survival of the gorillas is representative of the vitality that can return to a degraded national park. Regeneration of Volcanoes National Park has continued steadily following the eradication of cattle from the park in 1991. This has encouraged the return of other wildlife species that were displaced during a time of heavy human encroachment in the park.
