From your hotel in Kigali or Airport, drive to the Southern part. Along the way, you will visit the Nyanza Old King’s Palace – It used to be the administrative province during the monarchy rule in Rwanda. Rwanda’s Ancient Kingdom palace now has been reconstructed and visitors can now explore the replica King’s Palace with a new look but with the same features as it was during the Kingdom ship. It has been built using traditional materials and the same methods.
At the Palace, you will learn about the evolution of farming and building. This has come through centuries. Venture into the grounds to meet Inyambo – the long-horned cows. The unique appearance of these cows makes them beautiful to look at. These cows represent the royal heritage and are used in many local ceremonies. At this place, find out about the breeding techniques, and listen to the amahamba songs the shepherds sing as part of the grooming process.
Visit Butare Museum
The Butare museum is located an hour away from Nyanza town. A vibrant town with a history of Rwanda. This is one of the biggest historical centres in Rwanda. It was built y the Belgian government in 1989 and is a source of information on history and culture. The site is also known for the murder of Queen Rosalie Giacanda and several others in the times of genocide. Take lunch at some of the few restaurants and continue to Nyungwe Forest, 1 and a half hours away.

For anyone who loves watching the primates, Nyungwe is a haven for these creatures. With over 13 species recorded, a tour of this National Forest is worth it all. The Unika information centre at the heart of the forest will have detailed information about what to do depending on the time. There are several nature trails you can take that lead you to the forest depth. Expect to see the colobus monkey, the l’hoest Monkey, Grey-checked Mangabey, and Mona monkeys among others. A canopy walk is one of the other interesting activities. At an elevation of 50 meters above the forest ground, this will expose you to lots of bird species.
