Akagera National Park — Rwanda Self-Drive Safaris

Akagera National Park is arguably the best place in Rwanda to have day safaris. The park is situated only 2.5 hours away from Kigali and has amazing scenery as well as abundant wildlife, including the Big Five. One can easily rent a 4×4 car in Kigali and then enjoy the scenic drive through Rwanda into its savannah heartlands, which is one of the best road trips the country offers. Akagera National Park is the largest national park in Rwanda with an area of 1,122 km² and was established in 1934, which makes it one of the oldest national parks in Africa. Akagera was originally set up as a protected area because of its distinct biodiversity, which comprises three major types of ecosystems, namely savannah, mountain, and swampy areas.

A vast savanna with green woodlands as well as flowing waterways makes the park an excellent location for wilderness explorers looking for a secluded safari experience. With only 50,000 visitors per year, the national park can be considered the opposite of famous parks like Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, with about 350,000 visitors, and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, with 300,000 annual visitors.

A Conservation Success Story

What makes Akagera especially compelling today is the extraordinary wildlife recovery it has undergone. Lions and rhinos were once extinct in Akagera due to poaching, particularly during the political unrest and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. After the genocide, people returning to their country encroached on park areas, displacing wildlife and causing further harm. However, through determined conservation efforts, the park has been completely transformed. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, black rhinos in 2017, and in 2021, white rhinos were relocated to the park. Most recently, another 70 white rhinos were relocated to Akagera from South Africa in June 2025, currently undergoing careful monitoring by rangers before being fully integrated into the park’s growing wildlife population.

Akagera National Park — Rwanda Self-Drive Safaris

For the past decade and a half, African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) have been working together to rehabilitate the park, and the Big Five now flourish on the plains of Akagera. The park generated $4.7 million in revenue in 2024, with projections rising to $4.9 million in 2025 — a testament to how thriving conservation translates directly into economic benefit for Rwanda and its communities. In recognition of all this, National Geographic’s Travel magazine named Akagera among the world’s Best of the World 2026 destinations.

A visit to Akagera National Park

Safari & Animal Experience

Akagera is Rwanda’s only savannah park. It is home to lions, elephants, rhinos and over 500 species of birds and set amongst an incredible mix of lakes, rolling hills and open savannahs.

Accommodations in Akagera

Accommodation within the park ranges from Wilderness Magashi Luxury Camp and Akagera Game Lodge at the top end, through Ruzizi Tented Lodge in the mid-range to basic campsites for the budget traveller.

4x4 Camping Safaris

For good reason, Akagera’s vehicle of choice is the Toyota Land Cruiser. The park’s terrain – open savannah tracks, hilly, rocky, and sometimes muddy lakeside trails – calls for serious off-road capability. Camping makes a safari in Akagera all the rawer and more immersive.

Self Drive Safari in Akagera

The popularity of self drive safaris in Akagera National Park has increased due to its good roads, scenery and increasing wildlife population. Driving on your own offers total freedom as it allows you to choose your pace and duration for every game and you can remain spontaneous unlike group safari where everything is planned for you. You can create your own experience and save cost for families or a group which can be used for other adventure such as the boat trip in Lake Ihema.

Self drive safaris access point is only Mutumba Gate located on the south side, and 4×4 cars are highly recommended especially during the rainy season. It takes about an hour to reach the park gate covering 110 kilometers from Kigali. From Kigali up to 82 kilometers will be through good tarmac roads then dirt tracks for the rest of 28 kilometers until reaching the park head office. The park roads are relatively good although tracks on the north side can get bumpy when it rains; thus, Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles are highly recommended. Ensure that your car has enough fuel since there is no fuel station in the park.

It is advisable to have a park ranger guide you on your game drives because they will know where the animals can be found and provide useful knowledge regarding animal behavior. Early morning game drives give you the best opportunity to encounter the animals as they move back to their hiding places during the day. Park hours operate from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Wildlife in Akagera National Park

There are over 8,000 different animal species in the park, including lions, leopards, the eastern black rhinoceros, and over 500 species of birds. The Masai giraffes that were introduced in the park in 1986 have adapted well to the park’s open woodland areas, where over 100 of them can be found through surveys done in 2024. They are mostly seen near the acacia trees, eating from the tree’s canopy at sunrise.

The Burchell’s zebras are still abundant throughout the park, grazing along the impalas and topis. The elands, which are the largest antelope species, prefer the transitional zones between the swamps and the dry grassland, while oribi and reedbucks inhabit the lower grounds near the edge of the wetlands. As secondary predators in the park, the spotted hyenas continue to increase their numbers, forming loose clans and often seen during night drives.

The game drives conducted in the mornings and evenings yield good lighting conditions and better chances of spotting the Big Five. Nocturnal predators such as the leopards and hyenas can be spotted during night drives. In the dry season between June and September, the animals gather around the waterholes, while game drives take three to five hours all year round.

Akagera Camp Safaris

Camping in Akagera is the way to go for those who want to get lost in the wilderness. Camping is an inexpensive option that puts guests within easy reach of wildlife viewing all over the park. Overnight stays also enable visitors to take advantage of the early morning and evening game drives when wildlife is most active. There are a few campsites in and around the park. Some are just ground camping, and some are more elevated.
We offer rooftop tent camping on 4×4 Land Cruisers – a popular, affordable option for you above the ground and in the perfect position for game viewing from your sleeping spot. Our Land Cruisers are ideal for a camping trip and can carry four persons with two double rooftop tents. Ground camping tents are also available, waterproof and reliable even in the rainy season. New and upgraded accommodation options continue to open in addition to camping, including the recent renovation of Karenge Bush Camp and the late 2025 opening of Wilderness Magashi Peninsula, a new high-end safari camp. Most lodges in and around Akagera are high-end so camping remains the best way to experience the park on a flexible budget.

Lake Ihema boat ride

One of the most memorable experiences in Akagera is a boat trip on Lake Ihema. The lake is part of the largest protected wetland in Central Africa and a trip across the water takes you face to face with Nile crocodiles sunbathing on sandy banks, huge hippos basking in the shallows and a rich diversity of water birds including herons, kingfishers and the rare shoebill stork. When the Sun sets and turns the lake gold it’s one of the most photographed scenes in Rwanda. Elephants often come down to the water to drink. Boat trips are in shifts of 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 3:00 pm and 4:30 pm. You can also choose private boat rides at any time of the day as per your convenience.

Fishing Akagera National Park

At the calm shores of Lake Shakani, sport fishing is popular with Tilapia and Catfish among others being easily caught. You can fish in the peaceful waters to the background music of birds chirping and hippos grunting as if to cheer you on. The catch is yours to keep to roast, fry or grill and enjoy the taste of fresh fish from Rwanda. The best way to fish in Akagera is to combine it with a camping trip, when the fish of the day becomes the evening meal round the camp fire.

Walking Safaris

Game drives can’t give you the same experience of wildlife at ground level as walking safaris in Akagera can. You can follow guided walks on specific trails to follow animal footprints, see plants used in traditional medicine and get up close to the sights, sounds and smells of the African bush. Walking safaris cost around $30 per person and are guided by trained park rangers. They will ensure your safety and teach you more of the ecosystem. Families welcome and safety briefings given before each walk.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

For the ultimate Akagera experience, try a hot air balloon safari. Rwanda’s most exclusive way to see the park, a hot air balloon adventure offers unmatched bird’s-eye wildlife viewing and sweeping panoramas in total peace, with a celebratory champagne toast and post-flight breakfast in the heart of the park. This is especially popular for honeymoons, special occasions or for travellers who simply want to see the landscape from a perspective few ever experience.

🦁 Safari & Animal Experience

Akagera is the only savannah park in Rwanda and one of the most compelling wildlife safari destinations in East Africa. There are lions, elephants, rhinos and more than 500 species of birds living in an amazing mix of lakes, rolling hills and open savannah. The park, which spans 433 square miles, is home to the Big Five, impala, zebras and waterbucks across its grasslands, wetlands, woodlands and lakes.

The main activity is game drives but walking safaris, usually led by rangers, are a more intimate way to experience the bush, moving in silence and reading animal tracks, droppings and signs of wildlife. Evening experiences are also expanding. Night safaris start at sunset and provide the best opportunity to see nocturnal wildlife including elusive predators such as lions and leopards, in the park’s safari vehicle that can take up to seven guests.

Accommodation in the park ranges from Wilderness Magashi Luxury Camp and Akagera Game Lodge at the upper end, through Ruzizi Tented Lodge in the middle range, to basic campsites for the budget wildlife safari traveller.

– Luxury;  The Wilderness Magashi Camp is set in a private concession to the northeast with spectacular views over Lake Rwanyakazinga. The camp has just six spacious tented suites, with premium furnishings, en-suite bathrooms, private verandas and an infinity pool.
– Mid-range Ruzizi Tented Lodge is located on the shores of Lake Ihema, the park’s largest lake. Karenge Bush Camp, renovated and reopened in May 2025, consists of seven canvas tents located on the Kilala Plains.
-Budget/CampingCamping sites are Muyumbu, Mutumba, Shakani and Mihindi (USD $25 per person per night). Muyumbu is very much a ridge looking out over the lakes with Tanzania in the distance and is a perfect base for a **affordable self-drive safari in Rwanda.

🚙 Rwanda 4×4 Car Hire & Self Drive Camping with Land Cruiser

There’s a reason why the Toyota Land Cruiser is Akagera’s vehicle of choice. If you are planning a self-drive safari in Rwanda, this is the way to go. The park’s terrain – open savannah tracks and hilly, rocky and sometimes muddy lakeside trails – demands serious off-road capability, so 4×4 car hire in Rwanda is essential rather than optional.

Camping makes a safari in Akagera that much more raw and immersive. The first day usually takes you through the southern area, looking for giraffes, elephants, rhinos and rare birds, then you will settle in at Shakani or Mutumba Campsite. Whether at the lake with the hippos, or on the hill with panoramic views, the night gives you the true feeling of wilderness – dinner round the fire, distant calls of lions and an optional night game drive for the chance to spot the elusive leopard.

Day two is usually north to open plains with great game viewing including lions, buffalo and black rhinos, and a scenic lunch stop at Lake Mihindi Picnic Site.

Notes for a Land Cruiser camping trip, self-drive:

– Budget car rental Rwanda — a 4×4 hire offers transport, storage of camping equipment, water and food supplies in one vehicle- No camping except in designated sites according to park rules
– Try sport fishing right from your campsite at Lake Shakani, bring your own gear and cook your catch over an open fire
– Akagera is only a 2-3 hour self drive from Kigali and accessible by helicopter

A self-drive Land Cruiser rental for Akagera safari is the best combination of freedom, affordability and true bush experience – and one of the most rewarding budget car hire options for wildlife safaris in Rwanda. If you are a first time visitor looking for cheap car hire Rwanda for safari, or a returning traveler who enjoys the freedom of self-drive game drives, Akagera provides an unforgettable experience on every road.
