Karisimbi is a habitat for exotic plants and with four belts of vegetation, including a dense forest at the base and a barren volcano.

The caves were used as shelters during the genocide times in Rwanda. It was used as a shelter for Tutsi in the 1994 genocide. The caves are about 2 km long and were formed as a result of volcanic lava formation.
