Day 1 — Arrival in Kigali

Rwanda’s capital spreads across a series of green hills, overlooked by Mount Kigali at roughly 1,850 meters. As the country’s economic and cultural center, Kigali has an international airport, plenty of places to stay, and a good mix of dining spots, markets, and craft shops. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is one of its most significant sites. Between the striking architecture, lively streets, and hillside greenery, Kigali is often ranked among Africa’s more appealing capital cities.

Day 2 — Travel to Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park sits on the Rwandan side of the Virunga Mountains, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is best known as home to the mountain gorilla. Trekking permits are tightly controlled, giving visitors roughly an hour with a gorilla family once they’re located. The park also has excellent hiking, including the popular route up Mount Bisoke to its crater lake, plus the chance to visit the Karisoke Research Centre and Dian Fossey’s grave site.

Day 3 — Gorilla Trekking Day

This is the heart of the trip: Volcanoes National Park is home to ten habituated gorilla families. Trekkers gather for coffee before setting off in groups of up to eight, sorted roughly by fitness level, each accompanied by a guide and two scouts trained to handle emergencies. Trek length varies a lot depending on where the assigned gorilla family happens to be — anywhere from thirty minutes to most of a day.

In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, a community that has lived alongside the park’s gorillas for generations. It’s a chance to meet local residents on their own turf and get a genuine feel for Rwandan traditions and daily life.

Day 4 — Golden Monkeys and Conservation

Today’s trek targets golden monkeys instead of gorillas, again in groups of up to eight. These monkeys are lively and used to human observers, and tend to stay near the base of the volcanoes where bamboo grows. You’ll also visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, a 12-acre, sustainably built center just outside the park with research labs, a conservation library, and event space — all aimed at promoting gorilla conservation.

Day 5 — Departure

About Rwanda
