Private Airport Transfers in Rwanda Kigali and Entebbe
Airport Transfers in Kigali: What to Expect
Kigali International Airport (KGL) sits just 10 kilometres east of the city centre, making it one of the more accessible airports in the region. However, “close” does not mean “simple” — Kigali’s rapid infrastructure growth means traffic can stack up on the airport road during morning and evening peak hours, and the city’s hilly terrain makes navigation surprisingly complex for first-time visitors.

Types of Airport Transfers Available in Kigali
1. Private Airport Transfer (Sedan or SUV) The most comfortable option for individuals and couples. A private driver meets you at arrivals, handles your luggage, and delivers you to your hotel or onward destination. For a standard sedan transfer from Kigali Airport to the city centre, expect to pay in the range of USD $25–$45 depending on the vehicle type.
2. Shared Shuttle Transfer Several operators run scheduled shared shuttles from Kigali Airport to the city and, in some cases, directly to the Ugandan border at Gatuna. Shared shuttles are budget-friendly — typically USD $10–$20 per person — but they operate on fixed schedules and may involve waiting for other passengers.
3. Self-Drive Car Hire with Airport Pickup If you plan to drive yourself across the border or around Rwanda before heading into Uganda, self-drive car hire from Kigali Airport is available. A compact SUV suitable for Rwanda’s roads (a Toyota RAV4 or similar) typically starts at around USD $60–$90 per day, inclusive of basic insurance. Add a cross-border permit fee of USD $30 for the Uganda crossing.
4. Chauffeur-Driven 4WD for Safari and Cross-Border Trips For gorilla trekking itineraries that involve crossing into Bwindi or heading to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, a chauffeur-driven 4WD Land Cruiser or equivalent is the standard. These vehicles handle the unpaved sections of road in southwestern Uganda and give you a knowledgeable local driver who knows the border procedures. Rates typically run USD $120–$200 per day all-inclusive of driver, fuel, and the cross-border permit.
Airport Transfers in Entebbe: Gateway to Uganda
Entebbe International Airport (EBB) is Uganda’s main international gateway, located on a peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria, approximately 40 kilometres south of Kampala. The drive between Entebbe and Kampala is notorious for its traffic congestion — what looks like a 40-minute drive on a map can easily become a two-hour ordeal during rush hour.

Private Transfer to Kampala; A private vehicle (saloon car or minivan) from Entebbe Airport to Kampala city centre or hotels along Kololo, Nakasero, or Muyenga typically costs USD $30–$60, depending on the vehicle class. Premium SUV transfers run slightly higher.
Boda-Boda and Taxi (Budget Option) While motorcycle taxis (boda-bodas) and shared taxis (matatus) are available from the airport area, they are generally not recommended for international arrivals with luggage. They are cheap but chaotic for first-time Uganda visitors.
Hotel Shuttle Services Many mid-range and upscale hotels in Kampala offer airport pickup as part of their service, sometimes at a nominal charge. It is worth confirming this when you book your accommodation.
Cross-Border Transfer from Entebbe to Kigali For travellers departing Uganda via Rwanda — a very common routing for those on East Africa multi-country itineraries — a direct cross-border transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Kigali is bookable. This route covers roughly 500 kilometres and takes approximately 8–10 hours by road. A private cross-border vehicle (4WD with driver) for this route typically costs USD $250–$400 one way, covering the driver, fuel, vehicle, and the necessary cross-border documentation.
The Kigali to Kampala Road: Route Breakdown
Understanding the road between the two capitals helps you plan your stops and realistic travel times.
Kigali → Musanze (Ruhengeri): Approximately 100 km north, this stretch takes about 2 hours and passes through Rwanda’s rolling tea country. Musanze is the staging point for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park on the Rwandan side.
Musanze → Gatuna/Katuna Border Post: Roughly 80 km further north. This is the main Rwanda–Uganda crossing point, and the road is sealed throughout. Border formalities take 30–90 minutes depending on traffic and documentation.
Katuna → Kabale: Just 5 km inside Uganda, Kabale is a pleasant highland town and a common overnight stop on longer itineraries. Lake Bunyonyi is a short drive from here.
Kabale → Kampala: Around 410 km via the main highway through Mbarara and Masaka. This stretch takes 5–6 hours in good conditions.
Alternative routing for gorilla trekkers: From Kabale, a fork in the road leads westward toward Kisoro and then to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — this 3–4 hour drive on partially unpaved roads is why a 4WD is strongly recommended for anyone heading to gorilla trekking in Uganda.
