Entebbe International Airport (EBB) is Uganda’s main international gateway, located on a peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria, approximately 40 kilometres south of Kampala. The drive between Entebbe and Kampala is notorious for its traffic congestion — what looks like a 40-minute drive on a map can easily become a two-hour ordeal during rush hour.

This route covers roughly 500 kilometres and takes approximately 8–10 hours by road. A private cross-border vehicle (4WD with driver) for this route typically costs USD $250–$400 one way, covering the driver, fuel, vehicle, and the necessary cross-border documentation.
The Kigali to Kampala Road: Route Breakdown
Understanding the road between the two capitals helps you plan your stops and realistic travel times.
Kigali → Musanze (Ruhengeri): Approximately 100 km north, this stretch takes about 2 hours and passes through Rwanda’s rolling tea country. Musanze is the staging point for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park on the Rwandan side.
Musanze → Gatuna/Katuna Border Post: Roughly 80 km further north. This is the main Rwanda–Uganda crossing point, and the road is sealed throughout. Border formalities take 30–90 minutes depending on traffic and documentation.
Katuna → Kabale: Just 5 km inside Uganda, Kabale is a pleasant highland town and a common overnight stop on longer itineraries. Lake Bunyonyi is a short drive from here.
Kabale → Kampala: Around 410 km via the main highway through Mbarara and Masaka. This stretch takes 5–6 hours in good conditions.
Alternative routing for gorilla trekkers: From Kabale, a fork in the road leads westward toward Kisoro and then to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — this 3–4 hour drive on partially unpaved roads is why a 4WD is strongly recommended for anyone heading to gorilla trekking in Uganda.
