4-Day Cross-Border Safari: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes & Mgahinga National Parks
Day 1 — Arrival at Volcanoes NP + Golden Monkey Trekking
Drive from Kigali (~2.5 hrs) to Kinigi, the gateway village to the park. Arrive at the park HQ by mid-morning to collect your activity permits and get briefed. The afternoon is perfect for golden monkey trekking — a wonderful, more relaxed introduction to the forest before the main gorilla experience. These hyperactive, electric-blue-faced primates are a joy to watch.
Stay: Sambora Kinigi (4.9★ — boutique, fireplaces, exceptional service) or Virunga Lodge if you prefer panoramic lake views.
Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking, Volcanoes NP 🦍
The centrepiece of the Rwanda leg. Briefing at the park HQ at 7:00 AM sharp. Groups of 8 are assigned to a specific gorilla family, and the trek can take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours, depending on where the family has settled. You get one full hour face-to-face with the gorillas — one of the most moving wildlife encounters on Earth.
Tips: hire a porter (they’re invaluable on steep muddy slopes), wear layers, bring waterproof boots and gaiters.
Optional add-on: Visit the Dian Fossey Tomb on the slopes of Mt. Bisoke.
Day 3 — Mount Bisoke Hike + Cross into Uganda 🌋
An early start for the hike up Mount Bisoke (4,374m) to its stunning crater lake — a tough but rewarding 6–8-hour round trip with significant elevation gain. It’s one of the most challenging day hikes in Africa, so you’ll need decent fitness.
After lunch and a refresh, drive ~1.5 hrs west across the border into Uganda to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Settle into Mount Gahinga Lodge, steps from the park entrance, with a complimentary massage waiting for your tired legs.
Day 4 — Gorilla Trekking or Golden Monkeys, Mgahinga NP
Mgahinga is home to just one habituated gorilla family, making encounters here exceptionally intimate. Book your Uganda gorilla permit well in advance ($700 USD) — slots are very limited. Alternatively, Mgahinga offers excellent golden monkey trekking and a moving Batwa Cultural Trail with the indigenous forest community.
After the activity, you can drive back to Kigali (about 3–3.5 hrs) or spend an extra night in Uganda.
Practical Notes
- Gorilla permits: Rwanda (~$1,500 USD) and Uganda (~$700 USD) must be booked months in advance through the Rwanda Development Board and Uganda Wildlife Authority, respectively.
- Border crossing: The Cyanika border post between Rwanda and Uganda is the most convenient crossing for this route — open daily, relatively quick for tourists.
- What to pack: Waterproof hiking boots, long sleeves (for thorny undergrowth), gloves, a rain jacket, insect repellent, and snacks for the long treks.
- Best time to visit: June–September (dry season) offers easier trekking; the rains of March–May make it muddier but lush and less crowded.
